Cluedo print promotion - Horror
Print promotional material: The film is called Cluedo. It is horror/thriller movie.
Purpose
• The print promo’s purpose is to promote the film and encourage people to watch it. It wants to inform the public of the film’s release.
Medium
• We aim to create a number of different promotions for the horror trailer. Methods such as leaflets and flyers are among things we will be printing our promotions on. Two people said they’d like to see a horror movie advertised on a billboard, two other said TV, and the final two said they’d prefer to see one advertised in a newspaper.
Target Audience
• Our target audience are fans of horror and thriller movies. The whole point of the trailer is to try and encourage people to watch the horror movie we’re trailing. With all the different methods we plan on advertising, the trailer and print promos will also hopefully appeal to the general public. And, being in college, college students are also part of our target audience. The age range is 18-25 year-olds and generally males.
• The six people I surveyed were all between the age of 17-25 - all six were also males.
Content
• I am going to create a leaflet as part of our print promotion material. On this I will include the name the movie, the cinema it is showing at, when it is released and the actors and actresses. The aim of the leaflet will be to ensure the public are aware what the movie is all about. Half of the people surveyed said they’d like to see more images than text on a poster promoting a horror movie, whilst the other half would prefer to see an equal amount of both.
Style
• I have recognised from the research I have donethat horror promotional material must have certain characteristics such as certain font and colour. I expect the colour red and black and the font to be something like Goudy Stout. Each person nominated red and black as the colours they’d most associate horror movies with.
• 4/6 said they’d like to see the font Castellar used on a piece of horror material. The fonts Broadway and Veranda got one vote each, whilst Arial Black got none.
Schedule
• Scheduling is all about time management and ensuring tasks are met before deadlines. Time concerns and management are key within the media.
• Every person who works in the media industry has to have time management and many have deadlines to meet. For example; a journalist has a deadline as to when he/she must send in their report for it to be checked by the sub-editor and latterly the chief editor. If anything his completed late things can go very pear shaped, so the management of your time must not be underestimated.
• We aim to create a week-by-week schedule to ensure our project is going along timely. Contingency.
Print
• The definition of roles in print is, basically, the type of jobs you’d find within the print industry and what the job’s particular role is. Roles in print include jobs such as photographers, journalists, chief editors and sub-editors. I am going to be the creator of a cinema guide such as the Showroom Cinema Guide.
• Every job has a role, none more so than in print media. In fact, a job can have more than one role.
• Proposals for print promotional material include posters, flyers and leaflets. As a group we will create these types of material for our horror trailer.
Copyright
• Any music, images or any content used that are copyrighted cannot be used. You must come up with your own music, images and titles so it isn’t infringed by copyright, unless you find content which you are permitted to use. Slogans can also be included in content which is usually copyrighted.
• If you use content which you are unauthorised to use it could lead to serious consequences, and could incur a fine/penalty. Codes of practice is linked to copywriting, and people must adhere to rules like these to ensure nothing is undertaken illegally.
• The Copyright Law is used heavily in the media, and it is not surprising as to why. If someone creates an idea or product of some sort, they don’t want people to copy it, use it and take all of the accreditation for it, hence the use of the Copyright Law.
• Because we are using the name ‘Cluedo’ for our film, we would in normal circumstances have to ask for permission. If we were not to ask permission and still used it we would be liable to legal action. However, because were have chosen the name for educational purposes we don’t have to go through this process. This is a perfect example of copyright.
Health and Safety
• The Health and Safety Law protects everyone. It is there to ensure that anybody who is partaking in a media production is safe and healthy. Its intentions are to make sure nobody is hurt, so this law affects everyone. Risk assessments/consents
• Whilst taking part in practical projects at college I have had to take this law into consideration. I was part of a group which was creating a 2-minute film trailer, and although we stayed on the college site to record it, the law still applied. We filmed outdoors so we need to ensure the weather wouldn’t hamper our filming or, most importantly, our safety.
Resources
• We will be creating our print promo in college. We have access to computers and cameras to the necessary equipment is at our disposal.
• Every organisation and company needs the resources and facilities to create their media product. Things such as locations, settings, equipment and people all fall into this category.
• Models and actors need to be acquired and any props for the film trailer need to be available. With the trailer being based on horror/thriller, props could include guns, swords and even fake blood.
• Where will the shooting take place? It could, of course, be shot in separate locations, so this needs to be organised. Perhaps woods in a park may be the perfect setting for a horror trailer, a large house which could act as a mansion or haunted house of some sort.
Role
• Roles in the media include jobs such as photographers, journalists, chief editors and sub-editors, film-makers, directors, presenters, DJs, producers and many more.
• Each and every job has a role, and that will be no different when it comes to making our horror trailer – each person will have tasks which they must fulfil.
Budget
• When creating a media product, a budget usually comes alongside it. A budget is the money at your disposal to create your media product. How much money is available for costs such as salaries, locations, equipment and travelling. It is money which is set aside for the production.
• You must consider things such as travel costs and food and drink costs when analysing your budget. These aspects are all included in the budget.
• Whilst for our print promo we won’t have a budget in particular – we will get the gear free from the college, so what we must taken into consideration is perhaps travelling costs. Money for food at break times may also be required, so this in itself is a mini-budget, so to speak.
Research
• I will use the results from the questionnaire I compiled recently and also the things I have picked up on in class. After analysing my questionnaire results, it has gave me many more ideas for my horror trailer and promotional material. I learned that the majority of the people I surveyed enjoy watching horror movies.
• By asking only males, this could influence on my own production. It may also have been a mistake by asking people in the same age bracket too. By asking only males and a particular age group, I haven’t engaged the opinion of a wider variety.
